History

Many of you will not have heard of the Sussex Bulldog, especially those of you from outside the United Kingdom .

Many people within the U.K. have heard of the breed but have not seen one in the flesh.
The Breed has not been publicised and pushed forward, its spread has been through word of mouth and recommendation.

Let us before we continue, give you a brief outline on the history of the breed Mr. Brown has devoted his life to

The history of this wonderful breed is best started at the beginning.
And the beginning is historic in itself….

It goes back to 1984, Breed Creator and Founder Mr. David Brown embarked upon the task of creating an entirely new breed of dog. A breed he conceived in his mind some years earlier.
As a youth he was always a keen dog lover, His parents owned and bred Border collies throughout his childhood and he developed a keen sense of understanding for them, at an early age he was taught how to work cattle dogs.

This love for dogs became a passionate driving force for David, during his early teens however his own allegiance turned to the bull breeds, and soon owned a number of the established breeds within that category.

In his own words he says: “I have owned most of the bull breeds, and some have had excellent qualities. But they did not have the entire package; I wanted a dog that had all of those excellent qualities in one breed.

Mr Browns dream was to create an entire breed, it was to be a dog you would not have seen before anywhere in the canine world.

A completely new bulldog with a new pugnacious face, the challenge for him was not to re-create the K.C. bulldog face, or any other pugnacious face that you would recognize.

His goal was far more difficult to achieve, he wanted a unique look, one that would easily blend into the bull-breed category.

But so different that the breed cannot be mistaken for anything other than a Sussex Bulldog!
The history must also include the reason for the breed’s name the Sussex Bulldog was named so Because Mr Brown has spent most of his life living in this beautiful region of Great Britain, a region which displays a beautiful landscape, one which deserves equally aesthetically adorned animals to compliment it.

The Sussex Bulldog oozes all of the above and more, when he is out in such surroundings.
David Brown had endured many setbacks during the years of the breeds development, more than we dare mention, and far more than most breeders of established breeds could ever comprehend.

His efforts regularly thwarted by “natures way!” ……………….

But he continued on his mission until he had complete confidence in his art.

The Sussex Bulldog was first registered in 1986 by the A.R.F.E. based in the Netherlands.
It was not until 1999 when two of his close friends, who had owned Sussex Bulldogs for some years prior, decided to form  a club for the Sussex Bulldog.

The Sussex Bulldog Club of GB was the result and in a way a turning point for the breed.
The club has given every owner and breeder a sense of community.

The opportunity for each member/owner to obtain information and advice is invaluable.

Because we are small in number, the after care service is quite unique in the canine circles.

Every litter born is registered by the S.B.A. and pups homed are given a full 5 generation pedigree.

Which of course any prospective owner will be able to endorse with the knowledge that they themselves will have seen the parents ,grand-parents and in many cases great grand-parents in the flesh.

On the following pages we shall introduce the founder members of the S.B.A. with contact details.
